The Need To Read

For comics creators, consuming content is usually pretty low on the list of priorities. But, the truth of the matter is, you need to learn, you need to read, and you need to experience, in order to translate those lessons, insights, and images into compelling stories. And, if there is one thing that rings true with EVERY successful creator I’ve spoken with on the podcast, it’s that they read… A LOT. Through this podcast I’ve learned just how important reading actually is for creativity and to get a bit more insight from my guests I ask them to recommend one book for the Dream Team, they share with us so many amazing titles that each and every one of us should check out.

These are five books that I recommend, each of these books are fascinating and will be transformational in your creativity, productivity, and that oh so important thing we as artists always seem to forget… BRANDING. Dream Team, I urge you to check out these books, kick-start your creative process, and transform your creativity into productivity today.

How the World Sees You – Sally Hogshead

Just as the title suggests, How the World Sees You is a truly FASCINATING read, Sally lays it all on the line for us, she tells us why it is important to rediscover how you fascinate, how you should be presenting yourself to the world in your true light, and what you should be focussing on when you are creating work and marketing yourself. A game changer that every artist needs to read. As an artist, you are an entrepreneur and your business is yourself. This book helps you key in on who you are and urges you to become more of who you are!

On Writing – Stephen King

Stephen King is one of the best if not THE best story-teller today. His work has inspired millions of nightmares, and millions of artists. The way he crafts his characters is remarkable and his book On Writing is jam packed with VALUE BOMBS. He goes into his creative process and gives insight on how to craft a good story. An enlightening read that every member of the Dream Team needs to consume if they haven’t done so already.

Making Comics – Scott McCloud

Recommended by many of the guests that I have on the show and referred to as ‘the bible of comics’ Scott McCloud nailed it with Making Comics. Such a transformational work, a teaching tool, told in the style of a comic. Making Comics opens up your mind and really allows you to grasp just how extraordinary comics can be.

The One Thing – Gary Keller

If artists lack one thing, it is focus. This rings true even in professionals, the ADD mind (as we call it) keeps us always wanting to move onto the next project and explore the next shiny idea. The One Thing is so transformational, it helps ground you, urges you to keep yourself accountable, and is full of BIG IDEAS. Treating your artwork and projects with a business sense is a step in the right direction and if artists were able to include discipline into their craft and learn how to get into STATE and lean into their 20 percent, anything can be possible in the world of comics.

The Miracle Morning – Hal Elrod

So are you an early bird or a night owl? I’ll bet that you are a night owl and believe it within your soul that that’s just how you are wired. I was like that too but after reading Hal Elrod’s The Miracle Morning I challenged my prior belief and haven’t looked back. I bet you will have a similar experience with this amazing book and I know that it will have a real impact on your work and how you tackle your days.

Consume the ‘RIGHT’ Content

I have learned that reading and consuming content is ESSENTIAL when creating meaningful work of your own. Read comics but do not limit yourself, start reading fiction, non-fiction, poetry, autobiographies, feed your mind with amazing content so when you are ready to plant the seeds of your future they can be fully saturated with energy and easily flourish. All five of these books are absolutely amazing and if you have read any of these titles, let me know how they affected you.

Be sure to join Comics Manifest on July 11th for the official launch of the podcast! Amazing interviews with influential and inspiring creators in comics. 1. Undeniably consider that which you stated. Your favourite reason appeared to be on the web the easiest thing to take note of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed at the same time as other folks consider concerns that they just don’t understand about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
